the BEAT of the week: The Jubilee.

I can't even believe it's already Memorial Day weekend. If it snuck up on you too, you still have a chance of making the most of it with tickets to this weekend's Jubilee -- formerly known as the Silver Lake Jubilee. Probably looking to expand beyond being a simple neighborhood fest, the event this year continues to boast a musical lineup of both big and local names (Aloe Blacc, Kinky, The Soft Pack, Autolux, Abe Vigoda, and so on) plus the usual L.A. fanfare of food trucks and an all-out block party. A two-day pass ($35) gets you a free tote bag or T-shirt (until supplies last, of course), and a one-day pass is only $20!

Time to kick off the summer.

Advance Notice. Red Hot Chili Peppers at the Grove.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are a legendary Los Angeles band. Their debut album was released before I was born, and they are still undeniably cool over twenty-five years later.

On Thursday November 4, they'll be at the Grove's Barnes and Noble to present their new book, The Red Hot Chili Peppers: An Oral/Visual History. The book has to be packed with amazing stories--as the band has had many ups and downs in their years together, including drug addictions and various band members coming and going. A true "behind the music" for fans who want to better know the sources of favorite songs.

Check It. Ana Tijoux at the Bootleg Theater.

Ana Tijoux is one of those very talented female rappers in a very male-dominated genre who can definitely hold her own against her fellow male MCs. Her lyrics are smart, she's socially conscious, and she's got a unique style.

The half Chilean, half French MC usually has Spanish lyrics, but has been known to weave French into her songs.

The below video is off her latest album 1977 -- the year Tijoux was born in France after her family fled Chile under the Pinochet regime. She's extremely talented and her live performances are excellent.

Tickets to Ana Tijoux with Money Mark at the Bootleg are $10. The Bootleg Theater is located at 2220 Beverly Blvd. The show starts at 10 p.m.

Advance Notice. Chopin marathon.

This year has marked Frederic Chopin's 200th birthday and there have been celebrations worldwide (mainly in February-March when the composer "turned" 200.)

However, incase you missed the festivities LACMA is joining up with USC's excellent music department to put together a Chopin marathon this Sunday for free. If you're not entirely familiar with any of Chopin's nocturnes or moving piano solos,

The show begins at 6 p.m. at LACMA's Bing Theater.
