Eat Out. Canter's 80th anniversary.

Canter's is undoubtedly one of L.A.'s most classic restaurants. And today, you can celebrate their 80th (!!!) anniversary with them by enjoying their infamous corned beef sandwich, potato salad, pickle and chocolate rugelach-- all for just 80 cents! Really! Just stop by their Fairfax spot between 4pm and 12am today and get your grub on.

If you can't make it to the restaurant today -- or if you want another chance at an amazing 80-cent meal -- get to following the Canter's food truck this week. Eat Out. Canter's Deli food truck.

At the Downtown LA Art Walk last Thursday there were at least 30 food trucks, from Vietnamese, Mexican, desserts. Everything.

But what I was most excited about was that my favorite place to get a pickle also has a food truck and they've brought their pickles with them. Canter's Deli on Fairfax has gotten caught up in the food truck craze, and is driving around Los Angeles with quite a few of their their deli mainstays.

Check It. Family.

This is one of my favorite LA bookstores, Family on Fairfax Avenue across from Canter's Deli. Despite its tiny storefront, it's filled with excellent books, obscure artsy films, photography and comic books, music, and even has a gallery in the back.

Every time I come here I end up reading the first page of at least five or six really amazing sounding books, and regret when I have to leave.

They usually have several compilation books, including back issues of McSweeney's and the Best American Nonrequired Reading Series, as well as various Bukowski, Fante, Murakami, Sedaris, Miranda July. Basically any good book you may have been looking for is probably here. Each title that's for sale here is hand selected and must meet rigorous standards before getting placed on Family's shelves.

They also have really interesting movie titles from all around the world, and a good selection of CDs.

They also collaborate with CineFamily at the Silent Movie Theater and often have shows and literary events.

Family is located at 436 N. Fairfax Ave. and is open noon-9 p.m. daily.

Eat Out. The perfect pickle.

One of the things I will miss most when I leave Los Angeles, will be the phenomenal pickles at Canter's Deli. I am a huge pickle fan, and my quest to find the perfect pickle has taken me everywhere. I once walked to about one mile in early January to visit the hundred-year old business The Pickle Guys in New York's Lower Eastside, where they sell half-sour, sour, hot sour, and horseradish pickles and those were only comperable to the amazingness of Canter's pickles.

For me, the qualities that make a good pickle great are: a good crunch, a fair amount of salt (of course), not too much dill, and a lot of garlic. Canter's pickles have these qualities in spades. I once bought a small vat of these pickles, and ate one every few days for maybe close to two weeks. They are just that good.

The rest of their menu isn't stellar, but them being a deli and me being a vegetarian, there aren't too many options for me anyway. They do have a tasty double-baked potato and a good cup of coffee and when I visit that's usually what my meal consists of: potato, pickles, and coffee.
