Check It. Evil Goods' California Decks.

Nothing like showing off some L.A. pride while you're cruising down the city streets. If I could hold my own on a board, I'd totally be riding on an Evil Goods California deck. Cut into the shape of our beautiful state (how hasn't this been thought of before?) and emblazoned with an L.A. decal, the skateboard is definitely the sort of limited edition goodie that's worth splurging for. I'm even contemplating just getting one to put on my wall! But whatever you do plan to do with it, get your pocketbook out quickly: they are limited edition and have already sold out of its first run. Buy your deck for $120 here (check the column on the right).

Check It. Coconut Records' "West Coast" video [The Monday Download].

An oldie, but oh such a goodie. I was reminded of this song -- one of my absolute favorites -- this past weekend, and was more than happy to revisit the just-as-good video companion. Coconut Records, of course, is the solo music project for actor Jason Schwartzman, and this particular song was featured on the debut album, Nighttiming. The video doesn't feature Schwartzman, but instead follows well-known skateboarder Mark Gonzales as he whizzes through Germany in 1998. It sounds non sequitur, but it's actually strangely hypnotic and beautiful. Perfect way to start off the week.

Do It. U.S. Open of Surfing.

This unpredictable cloudy weather hasn't exactly made for great beach conditions, but you've still got a great excuse to don the bathing suit and sunscreen this weekend: the U.S. Open of Surfing.

Check out some of the best surfers in the world tackle those gnarly waves, and take part in the extra activities going on around too, because it's not just about surfing anymore. There'll also be skateboarding and BMX competitions going on, places to see art exhibits and murals, and even a fashion show. And on top of that, really great must-see bands like Cold War Kids, The Soft Pack and Weezer (!). And get this: it's all free.

Happy surfing (and rocking)!
The U.S. Open of Surfing will take place beginning this Saturday, Aug 1 until Sunday, Aug 8 at Huntington Beach in Orange County. Check out the schedule for competition and music set times.
