the monthly BEAT: Silver Lake. Sunset Junction Street Fair cancelled.

Earlier this month, we told you about the annual Sunset Junction Street Fair that should have been this weekend in Silver Lake, but has now been cancelled.

Apparently the festival organizers owed the city a bunch of money from last year and had not come up with enough for this year.

It's a shame to see a tradition (since 1980) die. Check out Randy Lewis and Margaret Wappler's Los Angeles Times article about the community's mixed emotions about the news.

Do It. Celebrate the Lunar New Year.

Happy Year of the Rabbit/Cat! I'm Vietnamese (and for us, it's the year of the cat, while for the Chinese it's the year of the rabbit), which means my family and I celebrated the Lunar New Year this week. It's a pretty fun event full of family, food and money, with a lot of hopeful and optimistic thinking for the upcoming year.

And hey, even if you aren't Chinese or Vietnamese, you can join in on the fun. Here's the L.A. Times' round-up for festivities from the Valley to Orange County, and LAist has some more L.A.-centric fun for you here. Chuc mung nam moi!

Check It. Pajamas.

Winter is the best time of year for cozy pajamas. Having a nice set of pajamas is great for hanging around at home on weekends, or having an early night any day of the week.

The Nick and Nora line (previously more high-end) is now sold by Target, and they have some classically cute designs (like clouds, and the owl-themed "It's a Hoot" pair pictured above).

Nordstrom of course has some good options, including Betsey Johnson and Munki Munki.

If you'd like a pair embroidered with your name, like Demi Moore has, this striped Ralph Lauren set has the option to personalize.

Check It. Weekend To Dos.

Whether the weekend brings rain or shine, a trip to the movie theater is likely in the cards for me.

Out this weekend:

Hereafter (Oct. 22) -- Matt Damon, Bryce Dallas Howard, dir. Clint Eastwood

Matt Damon as a psychic with a website. Eastwood is a fantastic director, so as silly as this one looks based on the trailer, I'll give it a try.

Conviction (Oct. 15) -- Hilary Swank, Sam Rockwell, Melissa Leo, dir. Tony Goldwyn

Based on a true story of a woman who puts herself through law school to represent her imprisoned brother.

Stone (Oct. 7) -- Robert De Niro, Ed Norton, Milla Jovovich, dir. John Curran (We Don't Live Here Anymore, The Painted Veil, and upcoming The Beautiful and the Damned)

A messy love triangle between a convict, his wife, and his parole officer. Curran directed Norton beautifully in 2006's The Painted Veil, and I'm looking forward to seeing another of their collaborations.

If you're in the mood for some live entertainment, on Sunday night, Glendale's own Michael Runion will be at the Echo opening for Gold Motel. Runion has worked with Rilo Kiley among other L.A. bands, and was a onetime member of The Elected. All ages. $8 advance, $10 day of show, tickets available on ticketweb.com. Sunday October 24 6:00 p.m.

Vintage fun to stay in for on Sunday evening: Viva Las Vegas (1964, Elvis Presley, Ann-Margret) on TCM, October 24 7:00 p.m.

Check It. Free Community Weekend at LACMA.

This weekend LACMA is opening its doors to the members of the community for free.

Both Saturday and Sunday visitors can view the museum's exhibits on fashion, masterpieces from Mexican history, and their "Eye for the Sensual" exhibit. There will also be live performances that compliment the museum's exhibit on Mexico Saturday between 12-4 p.m. in Hancock Park and a free photo booth is on the marquee.

Timed reservation tickets are required for admittance.

LACMA is located at 5905 Wilshire Blvd.
