The Washington Post just published a roundup of some great summer cookbooks, including the Meat Free Monday Cookbook. We're not vegetarians here at the BEAT, but are always interested to try delicious meat-free meal options.

Häagen-Dazs pistachio ice cream for dessert!

See it: Bernie -- a fascinating and very funny movie starring Jack Black and Shirley MacLaine, based on a shocking true story.

A great striped dress for the office or the weekends.

I got a mini version of this Fresh Sugar Rosé Tinted lip balm from Sephora for my birthday, and it looks and tastes so good! Coral is the latest shade from the collection.

How beautiful does Jessica Chastain look on the cover of T Magazine? A great loose blowout, a strong red lip, and a pretty yellow dress is such a perfect spring look. This Reese Witherspoon red carpet look from 2007 is still one of my favorites.

A simple recipe for cinnamon-sugar pecans. I made these for a party Saturday night and they were a hit!

Speaking of easy recipes ... enjoy the end of grapefruit season with a Greyhound!

HBO's "Girls" premieres tonight.

I spotted this beautiful Prada bag (Small Saffiano Lux Tote) in the JFK airport security line on Saturday morning. Dream purse. How well would it go with Repetto ballet flats, and a girly dress from Anthropologie?

Happy Holiday weekend!

How amazing would it be to see Woody Allen and his jazz band perform? He'll be at UCLA's Royce Hall January 29.

A good Bûche du Noël makes Christmas that much better.

A new Atwater/Glendale spot for microbrews.

A deliciously decadent French Toast Casserole I like to make on Christmas morning (it would be a nice start to the new year on Jan. 1 too!).

I love this Breakfast at Tiffany's sleep mask I got as a birthday gift this year - a must for long flights!

the BEAT of the week: Hedi Slimane's "California Song" at MOCA.

To put it modestly, Hedi Slimane is one of the most well-respected and most admired names in the fashion industry. He's helped build the modern fashion houses of Yves Saint Laurent and Dior Homme, and quite singlehandedly created what is the slim silhouette so common nowadays in menswear. But Slimane hasn't stopped there: he also designs album covers (Daft Punk), and writes and photographs (Vanity Fair).

His striking photography is getting its first proper West Coast show beginning this week, with the "California Song" exhibit at the MOCA Pacific Design Center. Divided into two parts, the installation will include a photo diary focused on California artists, musicians and youth culture, as well as a section with sonic, motion-photography. Select California bands, including L.A.'s own No Age and Ariel Pink, are also contributing music for the exhibition. Those two bands are slated to perform in the opening for the show on Nov. 11.

If you're familiar with any of Slimane's work, you already know that this exhibit will be beautiful and moving and distinct -- stark yet classy. You can take a peek at Slimane's photography here, in the meantime, but being able to see the work up close and personal will definitely be an experience of its own.

Hedi Slimane's "California Song" will be showing Nov. 12-Jan. 22, 2012 at the MOCA Pacific Design Center, located at in West Hollywood.

Click It. BEAT picks of the week.

It's an exciting week in the food world (and for anyone with a sweet tooth!), Christina Tosi's Momofuku Milk Bar cookbook is now available. On Tuesday November 8th she'll be doing two Los Angeles signings--one at 2:00 p.m. at the Beverly Hills Williams-Sonoma, and another at 5:30 p.m. at Roy Choi's Chego.

Another sugary item--between now and November 20th, any large drink from participating Carl's Jr.s comes in one of four Immortals collector's cups. I sure wouldn't mind looking at Henry Cavill (or Mickey Rourke for that matter) while enjoying an ice cold fountain Coke.

I love these boots for fall.

A sweet and under-appreciated movie starring Owen Wilson, Jack Black, and Steve Martin.

It's officially cold season, double up on Emergen-C packets--Raspberry and Tangerine flavors combined in water for one powerful and refreshing dose of Vitamin C.

There's still time to buy Magic Pink Ice from Arcona during October for 25% of the sale to be donated to Cancer and Careers. You really can't go wrong with any Arcona product, and this hydrating gel is one of their best.

Happy Halloween (I'll be drinking pumpkin ale and watching scary movies)!

Check It. Striped tops.

I have been stripes-obsessed for quite some time now. It's great to see that this trend is still in full swing for fall, judging by J. Crew's current collection. Stock up this week with a free shipping offer on their women's tees and knits - offer though Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. EST.

The Long-stripe boater tee pictured is $72. Their Vintage cotton stripe shoulder-zip tee ($42.50) in 'spicy cinnamon' would be perfect gear for casual fall cooking nights with friends and good red wine.

Gap's Supersoft striped crewneck T is also a great basic striped top. Petit Bateau's Women's marinière too.

We're big fans of TOMS, and of fun parties, here at the BEAT.

Tonight, there's a TOMS party at Santa Monica's very cool Viceroy hotel. Check it out!

Buy a pair of the super comfortable slip-ons and have them decorated by one of the talented Los Angeles artists in attendance.

Do It. Celebrate Kate Spade and Current/Elliott in Century City.

This event at the Century City Kate Spade shop on Thursday night sounds like a lot of fun! Creative director Deborah Lloyd is hosting, celebrating the 'Westward' collection, which is a collaboration with Current/Elliott designers Emily Current and Meritt Elliott.

I first heard of Current/Elliot a couple years ago when a lot of fashionable celebrities (Reese Witherspoon, Katie Holmes) were wearing their "Boyfriend" jeans. They're bringing their laid-back west coast style to the typically preppy NY-based line, and it's working--for me anyway, but that could just be the Malibu in me. There are six styles, ranging in price from $245 (wallet) - $1,295 (duffle).

Meet the designers and shop the collection Thursday night!

Thursday August 11, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Kate Spade Century City, 10250 Santa Monica Boulevard (in the mall).

Check It. LBD: An Homage to 'Breakfast at Tiffany’s.'

There's nothing quite as iconic in fashion as the LBD: the Little Black Dress. And possibly the most famous of them all? Audrey Hepburn's classic from Breakfast at Tiffany's, of course.

Both are being honored in the new exhibit at FIDM, "LBD (Little Black Dress): An Homage to Breakfast at Tiffany’s." It's the 50th anniversary of the film this year, and to celebrate, Givenchy has created a line-for-line replica of Hepburn's dress, now on display at FIDM. The exhibit is also showing other important LBDs throughout history, including those by Chanel, Christian Dior and Monique Lhuillier; and those worn in film and TV like Alias and True Lies.

Holly Golightly would approve.

LBD (Little Black Dress): An Homage to Breakfast at Tiffany’s is showing until Aug. 13 at the FIDM Museum & Galleries, located at 919 S. Grand Ave. in downtown. Admission is free.

Check It. Gladiator sandals.

This summer, everyone and their mother are wearing gladiator-style sandals. I've been a big fan since a classic H by Tommy Hilfiger brown leather pair I got in college. Today there are countless variations, but I still gravitate toward the simple ones.

A few favorites:

Bernardo (Mistral Sandal shown above, their Mojo Sandal is great too.)

J. Crew (lots of options here. I'm loving my Salinas in black.)

Steve Madden (if you're not looking to spend big on this trend.)

Happy trails, and don't forget a pre-sandal pedicure!

Advance Notice. The Earrings of Madame de ... at LACMA.

In 2008, Criterion put out a DVD of Max Ophüls' The Earrings of Madame de ... Sometime after that, we watched it at home and thoroughly enjoyed. It's a classic drama / romance film that is still a force nearly fifty years after its (1953) release. A "romantic masterpiece" according to the New York Times.

Have a low-key weekend after the holiday weekend, and catch Madame de ... on the big screen at LACMA on July 9.

Saturday July 9 at 5:00 p.m. Tickets $5 - (323) 857-6010, or order online.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is located at 5905 Wilshire Boulevard.

Check It. Jean Paul Gaultier's Classique Summer Fragrance.

I'm a sucker for limited edition (and attractive) beauty product packaging. Jean Paul Gaultier's Classique Summer Fragrance for 2011 is on shelves, and has all the right notes. While rose isn't normally something I go for in a perfume, its orange blossom, lemon, and jasmine make this 'Classique' a perfect summer scent, with some vanilla and musk in there too for good measure. And the bottle is marvelous.

The iconic designer is currently north of the border for a Montreal Museum of Fine Arts exhibition, The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk, that opens Friday. The show is set to travel to Dallas next, and then to San Francisco in March of next year.

Check It. Essie's Wedding Collection 2011.

Essie is famous for their vast selection of pale pink polishes. I have a handful of favorites, including Adore-a-Ball, Ballet Slippers, and Sugar Daddy.

Now it's June, prime wedding season, and their 2011 Wedding Collection added another favorite to my list: Better Together. It also contains a perfect classic red, First Dance (on my toes, below). A trendy pastel blue (think Hard Candy circa 1995), Borrowed & Blue, and another pale pink, Made to Honor, round out the collection.

The cute box set of four mini bottles is just perfect--I never finish a full bottle of nail polish, and it usually ends up getting heat or sun (or age) damaged about halfway through and changes color. With these convenient 5 ml bottles, nothing will go to waste.

Check out our favorite L.A. nail salons.

Happy manicuring!
