Want to give your manicurist a hard time? Choose Essie's 'Wicked' or 'Fiji'. Insider tip from my manicurist tonight (as she was painstakingly applying 'Wicked') ... those are the colors they use to test potential new salon employees!
My next book: Brooklyn. Nick Hornby (my favorite!) is adapting it into a screenplay, and in the film, Rooney Mara will play the lead.
A weekend treat idea: Starbucks Pumpkin Bread. It's ridiculously delicious, especially with a latte or hot tea.

On a rainy (or, in NY, snowy!) weekend, staying in and reading is the best thing to do.A few other books in my "queue": Furious Love: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and the Marriage of the Century, Then Again (Diane Keaton's memoir), and The Beautiful and Damned (with the fancy cover!).
If you're heading to the movies, I recommend Contraband.
Girls in New York City generally wear darker nail polish than L.A. ladies do ... I followed suit yesterday with a manicure of Essie's Devil's Advocate. My favorite pale polish is Adore-a-Ball, also by Essie.
If you like Lana Del Rey, despite her much-discussed sort of awkward SNL performances last week, you can pre-order her album Born to Die on Amazon, out January 31.
If you're making snacks for the football games today, read these essential guacamole tips from Rick Bayless.

Check It. Coral pedicure.
Deciding what color to get for a summer pedi? Coral. It's an ideal compliment to gladiator sandals! Carey Mulligan was picture perfect on the Comic-Con red carpet last weekend, with Essie (our favorite) shades of Capri on her toes, and sheer Blushing Bride on her fingernails.Other great shades of coral:

Check It. Essie's Wedding Collection 2011.
Essie is famous for their vast selection of pale pink polishes. I have a handful of favorites, including Adore-a-Ball, Ballet Slippers, and Sugar Daddy. Now it's June, prime wedding season, and their 2011 Wedding Collection added another favorite to my list: Better Together. It also contains a perfect classic red, First Dance (on my toes, below). A trendy pastel blue (think Hard Candy circa 1995), Borrowed & Blue, and another pale pink, Made to Honor, round out the collection.
The cute box set of four mini bottles is just perfect--I never finish a full bottle of nail polish, and it usually ends up getting heat or sun (or age) damaged about halfway through and changes color. With these convenient 5 ml bottles, nothing will go to waste.
Check out our favorite L.A. nail salons.
Happy manicuring!

Check It. Chanel Morning Rose.
I like a nice classic pink pedicure in spring and summer months, and this new Chanel shade is a really good one. Their summer 2011 collection just debuted--three colors--a sheer beige (Beige Pétale), yellow (Mimosa), and a medium pink (Morning Rose, shown above). For hands, I'm usually most comfortable and happy with a pale Essie color, but mixing things up with a brand new color of the season is fun too.
Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour is available at chanel.com, Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom, and other department stores, $25 / bottle.

Do It. A great manicure.
Finding a reliable place for a decent manicure is no easy task. Yesterday evening, after just over a week of dark (when in New York ... ) nails, I wanted it off, and a fresh application of a more comfortable pretty pale pink. I ended up getting one of the best manicures I've ever had (and I've had quite a few in my day) at Express Nails on Robertson, just below Gregory Way in Beverly Hills. For $11.
If you live in West L.A./Beverly Hills/West Hollywood/Hollywood, or even if you don't, I highly recommend it. They have a wide selection of colors, and I went with Essie's creamy pale pink "Adore-a-Ball" (pictured above) after briefly considering the slightly more clear "Mademoiselle".
Other nail salon recommendations:
Deluxe Nail Bar and Spa (2913 Main Street in Santa Monica)
Montana Nails (1411 Montana Avenue in Santa Monica)
Jessica's Nail Clinic (8627 Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood; appointment only)

Check It. Sephora by OPI's Urban Ballerina set.

Ballet style has been gaining in popularity since Natalie Portman's Oscar-worthy performance in Black Swan. This month, a new line of nail polishes from Sephora by OPI are inspired by the ballerina life.
The full line has six shades (which go for $9.50 each), including Leotard Optional (pinky/mauve/beige, far left) and Break A Leg-Warmer (gray, far right), but there's a set of minis available for $18. I never use a full bottle of nail polish, and they don't really age well, so mini bottles of of-the-minute shades seem like the best bet.
Available at sephora.com, or from Sephora retail locations - such as Santa Monica's 3rd Street Promenade or Hollywood & Highland.
