the BEAT of the week: LA Street Food Fest.

It's back! Just as its website says, this is the first and the original of the numerous amounts of street food fests that now populate L.A.'s calendars. And the LA Street Food Fest isn't slacking on its game. This year, the truck lineup includes: Border Grill, Nonna's Kitchenette, Gravy Train Poutinerie, Waffles de Liege, Kogi BBQ, Frysmith and more. Restaurants like Haven Gastropub, Short Order, Lazy Ox Canteen, Starry Kitchen and Playa are even getting into the action. And of course, for dessert -- look out for Longboards Ice Cream, Mother Moo Creamery, Short Cake, Coolhaus, Beachy Cream and other icy delights. There'll also be Singha beer and wine and tequila tastings on site as well.

Suffice it to say, the LA Street Food Fest knows what it's doing. It's all taking place this weekend at the Rose Bowl, so get your all-inclusive tickets for $45 here. (or go VIP for just $65) Check out all the detail here, and happy eating!

LA Street Food Fest takes place this Saturday, July 21st from 5pm-9pm at the Rose Bowl, located at 1001 Rose Bowl Dr. in Pasadena.

the BEAT of the week: L.A. Weekly's Pancake Breakfast.

L.A. Weekly may have recently lost its foodie guru, Jonathan Gold, but that doesn't mean it's giving up on the parties. Take note: it's 2nd Annual Pancake Breakfast. Does it get any better than a good excuse to indulge in the best meal of the day with some of L.A.'s best chefs? (Answer: No.)

The big soiree won't be happening until August 5, but you'll be smart to get your tickets once they go on sale today. And you should probably just start dieting now, because the event's lined up more than 25 different restaurants to offer their own tasty versions of the old breakfast standby, including: Salt's Cure, Langer's, The Nickel Diner, LA MILL, BLD, Tiara Café, Fred 62, Auntie Em's, The Hungry Cat and Square One.

What a great way to start off your morning.

The L.A. Weekly Pancake Breakfast takes place August 5 from 11am-2pm at Vibiana, located at 214 S. Main St. in downtown. Tickets are $30 each.

the BEAT of the week: Taste of the Eastside.

L.A.'s 'eastside' neighborhoods -- including that of Silver Lake, Los Feliz, Atwater Village, Eagle Rock, among others -- have become well-known for their 'hip,' young populations, a sort of nerve center thriving with those who care about all things culture: art, music, fashion.

And you can add food to that list. Among the classic eastside standards like Intelligentsia, Little Dom's and Cliff's Edge have come a slew of new restaurants and eateries in the past few years, enticing foodies and locals alike to dine on some of the best and creative foods coming out of this city.

Need to catch up? Get your forks out. This weekend is the second edition of the Taste of the Eastside, a full-on food and drink fest celebrating all that is cuisine on the Eastside. Participants this year include Elf Cafe, Good Girl Dinette, Hugo's Tacos, L&E Oyster Bar, Malo, Pazzo Gelato, Proof Bakery, Xoia Vietnamese Eats, Eagle Rock Brewery, Golden Road Brewery and Silver Lake Wine. A simple $35 gets you unlimited tastings from all the restaurants, another $10 will also buy you a flight of wines or beer. There'll also be cooking demonstrations, and the proceeds will help to benefit the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, Barnsdall Park, Rose Scharlin Nursery School and SEE Los Angeles.

Time to get hip, and be well-fed while at it.

Taste of the Eastside takes place from 1pm-5pm this Sunday, May 6 at Barnsdall Park, located at 4800 Hollywood Blvd. in Los Feliz. Get tickets here (price goes up the day of the event, so purchase now!).

the BEAT of the week: LA Weekly's Gold Standard.

Well, the rumors are true: LA Weekly's beloved food critic/expert Jonathan Gold will soon be leaving the publication for the L.A. Times.

So this is your very last chance to enjoy such a major foodie paradise -- otherwise known as the Gold Standard -- in this incarnation, at least. And it'll surely be a blowout of a last event. Gold's invited his favorite foodmakers from all over the city to this event, where you can finally get a taste of all of the action. Animal, Mozza, Short Order, ink., Street, Jitlada and so many more will all be in attendance, as well as a long list of wine and beer and spirit providers. For $75 general admission, for all-you-can-eat of L.A.'s best (you have four hours of pure eating!), you really can't beat it.

Happy eating!

The 4th Annual Gold Standard takes place Sunday, March 5 from 1pm-5pm at the Petersen Auto Museum, located at 6060 Wilshire Blvd. in Mid-City.

Do It. Bloomfest LA.

If you love exploring downtown Los Angeles as much as we do, check out Bloomfest LA this weekend.

The music, street art, and food festival is a tribute to the late Joel Bloom, community activist and owner of the now-closed arts district Bloom's General Store.

With official partners like KCRW, LA Weekly, Honest Tea, American Apparel, and Whole Foods (among others), this is bound to be a success. There will be food trucks including Coolhaus and LudoTruck too.

Related post--Read about my LudoTruck experience here.

Saturday July 23, 2:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. at 3rd Street and Traction Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles. Admission is free.

The Monthly BEAT: Venice. Coffee shops.

I found out just how seriously Intelligentsia takes coffee when I wrote an Archetype piece for Los Angeles Magazine on Intelligentsia (Silver Lake) barista Rachelle Tews.

One of the Chicago-based company's west coast locations is on the very cool Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice, an area that's home to plenty of good beans.

Intelligentsia's Venice Coffeebar is worth checking out for the impressive modern industrial space alone, but you'll surely want to grab an espresso drink, and maybe a pastry, while there.

Other notable Venice-area coffee spots:

Abbot's Habit - a very neighborhood-y sort of hippie-style cafe that serves great coffee. An early morning favorite of mine during my LMU (Birkenstock-wearing) days.

Rose Cafe - reliable coffee, delicious fresh food, and a cute gift shop.

Urth Caffé - you cannot go wrong at Urth. Coffee, tea, breakfast, salad, soup, panini, chocolate cake, it's all spot-on. Technically this is in Santa Monica, not Venice, but it is on Main Street, which is just around the corner from Abbot Kinney.

Bring a newspaper to Venice this weekend and stop by one of these places for a relaxing morning and a stroll down Abbot Kinney and/or Main Street!

Do It. Artisanal LA and Unique LA.

Ah, it's gift-giving time. And for those who are already stressing out about what to get for your loved ones, but still want to avoid the mall and the general boring gifts, then this weekend is for you. All you'll have to do is head on over to downtown and you'll be able to hit up two of the best craft and artisanal fairs this city has to offer.First up is Artisanal LA, located at the Cooper Design Space and offering samples and delicious, delectable goodies from more than 30 local artisans. Think special treats like chocolates, fruits, pies, spices, meats, ice creams, breads, etc. Basically anything your inner foodie could desire.

Cooper Design Center is located at 851 Santee St. in downtown. Admission is $6 (cash at the door), which includes a free beverage, roasted chestnuts (really!), and donation-based gift wrap.

Then there's Unique LA at the California Market Center. They've got all your crafty gift dreams in order, from T-shirts and scarves and apparel to jewelry, home decor, posters, and pet things. And this ain't your Grandma's crafts (no offense); the selection, like from Artisanal LA, comes from great and accomplished vendors. There'll even be an Amoeba pop-up shop!

The California Market Center is located at 110 E. 9th St. in downtown. Admission is $10, which includes free beverages, DIY workshops and photo booth fun.

Best part about this all? They're right down the street from each other, and you can go to both at a discounted price if you keep your wristband for at least one (Get $1 off Artisanal with a Unique wristband/Get 2-for-1 admission at Unique with an Artisanal wristband). It'll definitely be good for shopping for unique and personable gifts, and you'll be helping out local artists too. Don't pass up this super easy way to get all your holiday shopping done!

Both events are taking place both Saturday and Sunday, from 11am-6pm.

Eat Out. Fresh Bites.

There's a new restaurant in town, and it's fresh and delicious. Within the past year or so, the Sunset/Fairfax area has been re-vamped quite a bit. Additions include Trader Joe's, CB2, The Veggie Grill, and now Fresh Bites.

From the owner of Beverly Hills' Basic Bites is a big, bright, airy, modern new space that serves everything from muffins to pasta dishes. Fresh squeezed juice concoctions are on most tables in the early hours of the day, and from omelettes to salads, it's all fresh and fulfilling.

Like Urth Caffe, Fresh Bites is not cheap for somewhere that you order at the counter, but it's not ridiculously expensive either, considering the high rent district it calls home.

Definitely a good stop for breakfast or lunch--haven't yet tried the dinner items.

Long hours are always a plus, 7:00 a.m. till 12:00 a.m. More info: (323) 822-2900

Eat Out. Brooklyn Bagel Bakery.

L.A. is sprinkled with a few good bagel shops, most of which are not on the east side. Fortunately, one of the oldest and best is. The Brooklyn Bagel Bakery is on Beverly just west of Alvarado, near downtown Los Angeles.

It's a large industrial-style space, not at all like a cozy coffee or donut shop. When you see the place, you feel like they know what they're doing, and you're right. The bagels are fresh and delicious, and come in a really wide variety of flavors, including Oat Bran, Strawberry, Cranberry Apple--and of course classics like Sesame, Egg, Cinnamon Raisin (pictured), and Cheese. Cream cheeses come in several flavors as well.

They have been rated 'Best' by Los Angeles Magazine, and been featured in the Los Angeles Times (where I first ate a Brooklyn Bagel).

The prices and the hours are great. Every day after 3:00 p.m., all fresh bagels are half price--a bagel "Happy Hour"!

The Brooklyn Bagel Company is located at 2217 Beverly Blvd. Open 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. For more info: brooklynbagella.com, (213) 413-4114.

Check It. Gelson's.

In a big city like Los Angeles, we have so many choices of supermarkets, they should all constantly be on their toes, bringing their A-game if you will. That's not exactly the case, but Gelson's is one that consistently impresses. Yes, it's on the expensive side, but after debating for years if it's worth it, I decided yesterday it is.

The Gelson's on Hyperion and Griffith Park in Silver Lake is especially wonderful. Not only do they have the widest selection of cold drinks (from Blue Moon's Honey Moon Summer Ale to every flavor of Snapple to Honest Tea, to Diet Cherry Coke) of anywhere I've seen, the checkers and baggers are friendly, the manager is stellar, and they have ample convenient parking.

Olive bar? Check. Fresh organic fruit juice, check. Spicy tuna cut roll on soy paper? Ahh, that last one would throw most supermarkets for a loop--not Gelson's, $7.29, and it's super fresh, with fluffy rice that doesn't taste like refrigeration. What's great about Gelson's is, you can buy big brand products (who doesn't like Lay's?) as well as smaller, more gourmet brands, like La Brea Bakery breads, a variety of French brie cheeses, and Tate's Bake Shop cookies.

A fun side note--this Gelson's was the original Disney Studios, when Walt and his brother Roy lived just up the street.

Do It. Bike night at the Hammer.

Get your bike on/get on your bike tonight and head to Westwood's Hammer museum for Bike Night at the Hammer!, an evening that will include free vegan food and live entertainment.

There will be a bike valet, screenings of UCLA student bike-themed short films, and a 9:00 p.m. screening of Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (I'd say Pee-Wee is up there with Lance Armstrong on the 'everyone's favorite bicyclist' list).

Thursday April 8 at 7:00 p.m. - the Hammer is located at 10899 Wilshire Blvd. in Westwood.

Etc. 2nd Annual Gold Standard Food and Wine Event [Guest Post].

This past weekend I attended the L.A. Weekly's second annual "Gold Standard," a food-sampling event where attendees get to try specially chosen small dishes from 40 diverse Los Angeles area restaurants. “Gold Standard” is named for Jonathan Gold, the Weekly's Pulitzer Prize-winning food critic (and patron saint of the local foodie-blogger scene), as he is the one who chooses the participating restaurants. I, just like pretty much everyone else I know who is familiar with his work, am a huge fan of his writing, as well as his keen insight into the local culinary-culture scene.

After attending a second time, I remain convinced that “Gold Standard” is a perfect outing for those living in So Cal who (like me) consider the act of eating delicious food with friends to be among the more worthwhile and satisfying pursuits of life. Admittedly, the $60 cost is on the high side, and I found the food this year to be slightly less impressive when compared with last year's (my friend thought that this time there were fewer in the way of trendy new restaurants, a-la Animal, so maybe that's why I wasn't blown away by as many of the dishes this time). But such minor complaints aside, I definitely had a great time once again.

For one thing, the venue this year--the Petersen Automotive Museum--proved to be a lot easier to navigate than last year's site (the West Hollywood location of Smashbox Studios), which was a major complaint of many who attended. Also, Stella Artois and Bulleit Bourbon provided free custom glasses for attendees, and I was definitely not alone in my excitement at being able to go home with a gold-rimmed Stella beer glass! (What can I say; I'm a sucker for those commercials...) Most important though were the samples of food from some of Mr. Gold’s favorite local eateries, places like Jitlada, Palate Food and Wine, Wurstküche, and the Nickel Diner (who provided samples of their now infamous Maple Bacon Donut). And you could chase it all down with wine, beer and bourbon, all of which was also included in the $60 entrance fee. So really, what's not to like?

Personally, I enjoyed the frozen treats available from two of the stands providing desserts. One was that manned by the Bulgarini Gelato dudes, with their impressively authentic Italian gelato, something I've been meaning to try ever since Gold first started touting it a few years ago. Upon tasting their Chocolate with Sea Salt flavor, I was immediately transported back to the time I spent studying abroad in Florence a few summers ago. The other stand was the Saffron Spot ice cream table, which had a number of their own unique flavors of ice cream, all of which were delicious.

While at the event I was able to corner Gold briefly and ask him about Slake, the new magazine devoted to L.A. that his wife Laurie Ochoa--the Weekly's recently departed editor in chief--is heading up. I didn't find out many details, but it sounds as if they are continuing to move forward on it, and I'm really excited to read the first issue.

Anyway, if you like trying some delicious and very diverse kinds of food, and are willing to throw down a bit of money for an afternoon of some good old-fashioned gluttony, I would definitely consider looking into attending next year's event.

Check It. Julie & Julia on DVD.

Passion. Ambition. Butter. Do you have what it takes?

The tagline speaks to the roles of both ambitious women portrayed in the Nora Ephron-directed (Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail) foodie film--the legendary Julia Child, and New York blogger-turned-author Julie Powell. Julie & Julia, released in August of this year, is available today on DVD.

Although Meryl Streep (who graces Vanity Fair's January 2010 issue) has widely been credited for carrying the film, I found Amy Adams as Julie to be charming and relatable--qualities Adams brings to most of her roles. If you didn't catch it on the big screen (it's still in a couple L.A.-area theaters) this is the perfect chance to finally see the much talked about inspirational (524 recipes in 365 days!?) comedy. Now if only it came with a plate of baguette bruschetta!

Eat Out. Dollar taco night at Don Antonio's.

A delicious restaurant taco for $1? Yes. Wednesday nights at Don Antonio's in West L.A. from 5 p.m. till 11 p.m. The mid-week happening is always packed, so arrive early. Avoid the temptation to order rice and beans, as that will quickly add up and nullify the good deal you can get by making dollar tacos an awesome and inexpensive dinner. Although I do recommend a margarita along with the tacos--either while you're waiting at the bar, or to celebrate when you finally get a table. Feliz Diciembre.

Don Antonio's is located at 11755 W Pico Blvd. in West Los Angeles
