Keanu Reeves narrates (and co-produces) a fascinating and pertinent new documentary about the movie industry shift from exclusive use of photochemical film to digital--or, in his words, "about the science, art, and impact of digital cinema". Numerous big name directors including film history aficionado Martin Scorsese, 3-D innovator James Cameron, and international art scene multihyphenate David Lynch weigh in. Side By Side is rolling out to theaters in select cities nationwide now through December.

The Washington Post just published a roundup of some great summer cookbooks, including the Meat Free Monday Cookbook. We're not vegetarians here at the BEAT, but are always interested to try delicious meat-free meal options.

I got a mini version of this Fresh Sugar Rosé Tinted lip balm from Sephora for my birthday, and it looks and tastes so good! Coral is the latest shade from the collection.

Want to give your manicurist a hard time? Choose Essie's 'Wicked' or 'Fiji'. Insider tip from my manicurist tonight (as she was painstakingly applying 'Wicked') ... those are the colors they use to test potential new salon employees!

My next book: Brooklyn. Nick Hornby (my favorite!) is adapting it into a screenplay, and in the film, Rooney Mara will play the lead.

A weekend treat idea: Starbucks Pumpkin Bread. It's ridiculously delicious, especially with a latte or hot tea.

How beautiful does Jessica Chastain look on the cover of T Magazine? A great loose blowout, a strong red lip, and a pretty yellow dress is such a perfect spring look. This Reese Witherspoon red carpet look from 2007 is still one of my favorites.

Have you tried Starbucks' Blonde Roast? It was the hot item during my morning stop today.

I've been loving slathering on Aveeno's Positively Ageless Reconditioning Night Cream. It smells fresh and is a great creamy but not too heavy consistency.

Since discovering Clinique's Black Honey (above, far left) lipstick in the late 1990's, it has been a constant fixture in my makeup bag. Now, Clinique has expanded their "Almost" line by seven other shades--from pale pink Shy Honey (second from left) to a bright and punchy Flirty Honey (far right). I'm curious to try the more muted shades, like Chic Honey and Lovely Honey.

In the February issue of In Style, Faith Hill shares her beauty must-haves, including a BEAT favorite, Morrocanoil hair treatment.

A long weekend is the perfect time to catch a museum exhibit you've been meaning to see ... California Design, 1930 - 1965: "Living in a Modern Way" is at LACMA until June 3.

We love a getaway weekend in Vegas, and with some worthy upcoming concerts at the very stylish Cosmopolitan hotel, there's even more reason to head for the desert. David Gray on February 24, the Shins on April 13, and Snow Patrol on May 12. Tickets available now through Ticketmaster.

A cute film about young love, by a young California director--Like Crazy. It's showing at the ArcLight and the Landmark, among other Los Angeles-area theaters.

Another easy-on-the eyes college (and beyond) romance--One Day--came out on DVD this week. Just after its star Anne Hathaway's real-life engagement.

Click It. BEAT picks of the week.

It's an exciting week in the food world (and for anyone with a sweet tooth!), Christina Tosi's Momofuku Milk Bar cookbook is now available. On Tuesday November 8th she'll be doing two Los Angeles signings--one at 2:00 p.m. at the Beverly Hills Williams-Sonoma, and another at 5:30 p.m. at Roy Choi's Chego.

Another sugary item--between now and November 20th, any large drink from participating Carl's Jr.s comes in one of four Immortals collector's cups. I sure wouldn't mind looking at Henry Cavill (or Mickey Rourke for that matter) while enjoying an ice cold fountain Coke.

I love these boots for fall.

A sweet and under-appreciated movie starring Owen Wilson, Jack Black, and Steve Martin.

It's officially cold season, double up on Emergen-C packets--Raspberry and Tangerine flavors combined in water for one powerful and refreshing dose of Vitamin C.

There's still time to buy Magic Pink Ice from Arcona during October for 25% of the sale to be donated to Cancer and Careers. You really can't go wrong with any Arcona product, and this hydrating gel is one of their best.

Happy Halloween (I'll be drinking pumpkin ale and watching scary movies)!

Check It. Les Jeans de Chanel.

Lately I've been excited over Chanel's Fall 2011 metallic nail polish line, and now this!

On September 8, Fashion's Night Out in NYC this year, denim-inspired Les Jeans de Chanel will debut.

I love the flat muted tone of Blue Boy, it reminds me of soft cotton, á la James Perse T's.

Join the waitlist today, and while you're at it, blue jean baby, download Elton John's "Tiny Dancer".

Check It. Kiehl's Creme de Corps Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter.

You know when a product smells so good you just want to eat it? That is definitely the case with Kiehl's Creme de Corps Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter. I got a teeny sample jar of it earlier this year, and have been majorly enjoying it occasionally on freshly shaven legs (and some on my arms (not shaven) too).

This is a fluffier and more delicious (not literally) version of the Kiehl's Creme de Corps longtime cult classic body moisturizer, which has gained even more fame recently thanks to Equinox.

Check It. Travel candles.

Sometimes you need a little extra comfort from you're away from home, and travel candles are a great way to fill a foreign space with a scent, and therefore a mood, that you love.

I recently picked up this cute (and great smelling) Fleurs de Nuit travel candle at Catbird on Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn. The beauty of a travel candle is it's lightweight, has a lid, and is a cute small size that's just right so you don't end up wasting (or toting around) a half-candle's worth of wax.

Anthropologie also has great travel candles.

Barneys too.

Check It. Jean Paul Gaultier's Classique Summer Fragrance.

I'm a sucker for limited edition (and attractive) beauty product packaging. Jean Paul Gaultier's Classique Summer Fragrance for 2011 is on shelves, and has all the right notes. While rose isn't normally something I go for in a perfume, its orange blossom, lemon, and jasmine make this 'Classique' a perfect summer scent, with some vanilla and musk in there too for good measure. And the bottle is marvelous.

The iconic designer is currently north of the border for a Montreal Museum of Fine Arts exhibition, The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk, that opens Friday. The show is set to travel to Dallas next, and then to San Francisco in March of next year.

Check It. Essie's Wedding Collection 2011.

Essie is famous for their vast selection of pale pink polishes. I have a handful of favorites, including Adore-a-Ball, Ballet Slippers, and Sugar Daddy.

Now it's June, prime wedding season, and their 2011 Wedding Collection added another favorite to my list: Better Together. It also contains a perfect classic red, First Dance (on my toes, below). A trendy pastel blue (think Hard Candy circa 1995), Borrowed & Blue, and another pale pink, Made to Honor, round out the collection.

The cute box set of four mini bottles is just perfect--I never finish a full bottle of nail polish, and it usually ends up getting heat or sun (or age) damaged about halfway through and changes color. With these convenient 5 ml bottles, nothing will go to waste.

Check out our favorite L.A. nail salons.

Happy manicuring!
